Thea makes fake places.

Thea Goldman is a Brooklyn-based scenic designer and visual artist.

Growing up on the wind-battered coast of the North Atlantic, steeped in the rich culture of Provincetown, MA, Thea is passionate about creating work that draws from the natural world and amplifies queer voices. She believes that in the right hands, spatial design can be a tool for change and a uniquely powerful source of joy. She strives to create art that is responsible, clever, and fun. With a maximalist flair and love of color, Thea’s sets have been described as “shout[ing] right off the stage.” (Provincetown Magazine, 2024).

Whether taking the form of theater, exhibits, or immersive experiences, spacial design is an inherently playful endeavor. In her practice, Thea prioritizes child-like exploration, while simultaneously grounding her work with meticulous dramaturgy and research. The results are spaces that capture the viewers imagination, and fit the source material like a puzzle.

When Thea is not designing or finding inspiration in NYC’s theater scene, she’ll probably be hiking the Hudson Valley, or filling her apartment with bizarro knick-knacks and taxidermy. She lives with her partner, along with a very spoiled shih tzu and rabbit.
